Actor Robert Powell sent '570 photographs' to Camden Council over e-bike pile-up outside his door

Actor Robert Powell has spoken out about his four-year battle with Camden Council over e-bikes piling up in a parking bay outside his Highgate home.

The Bafta-nominated actor, known for his roles in Jesus of Nazareth and Holby City, said he had “sent 570 photographs” showing the bikes cluttering his doorstep and had urged the council to intervene via email.

The 81-year-old said he and his wife Barbara Lord once had 100 bikes outside their front door.

The actor told the Camden New Journal: “You’ve got two octogenarians here who are in danger of being killed.

“The entire pavement has been blocked by bikes. Camden say they prioritise safety and safer travel, so do they know that allowing bikes on pavements is not safe for anyone?

“Last year we called the police about the bikes, they just laughed.”

The spot is particularly popular because of its proximity to Hampstead Heath, Mr Powell told the newspaper.

He said he was terrified of having a heart attack for having to move around 10 or 12 bikes a day.

Mr Powell said his GP had even written a letter to the council detailing the stress the situation was causing the couple.

Camden Council has said it is working to relocate the bay and has marked out a new bay further up the lane.

A spokesman said: “We’ve been in touch with Mr Powell and Mrs Lord and assured them that we’re using our powers to relocate this bay while we work to secure a new permanent location.

“While we’re committed to promoting active travel options like cycling, we also understand how inappropriate parking of electric bikes can block access for residents.”

“As part of our new approach, our team have been busy enforcing the removal of obstructive bikes – without notice – as part of their regular inspections.”

Lime were unable to offer a comment but said it was working with Camden Council to relocate the bay and create more space for e-bikes.

It also indicated that the parking bay could be better placed and recommended it be moved due to issues with overcrowding.

Camden Council and Forest were also contacted for comment.
