Actor Killian Scott says speaking in an English accent while filming Dublin Murders made him 'cringe'

Actor Killian Scott said speaking in an English accent while filming new crime thriller Dublin Murders made him "cringe".

The former Love/Hate star told Ryan Tubridy how he managed to keep the accent in between takes even though he was surrounded by people speaking Irish accents on set.

Killian, who plays chain-smoking Detective Rob Reilly, in the BBC drama said: "There is a little bit of self-consciousness, particularly in the beginning.

"If you're in Ireland, shooting with exclusively Irish actors and Irish crew who you've met and known, to sort of be in this English accent all the time, I just felt myself cringing occasionally when I would ask one of the assistant directors for an Americano in this English accent."

"I generally try to (stay in character), in terms of naturalising it, it helps. Once you've kind of relaxed into a role, the accent itself naturally relaxes.

"There's a dialect coach in Belfast who has worked with Brad Pitt and Daniel Day-Lewis and unfortunately then, he was lumped with me.

"I had him on board and also Saul Dibb, our first director is from London, so you have people looking out for you.

"The cast were incredibly patient and Sarah Greene is wonderful to work opposite, she was very supportive".

Killian added that he would be "happy" if the show "gets past" Irish friends or an Irish audience.

The actor also had a laugh when he heard that he'd been compared to a "poor man's Ben Affleck" on the Irish version of Gogglebox.

He said: "That is the just one of the great things that I've ever come across".

And he revealed his brothers and sisters would tease him for mercilessly if they heard the comparison.
