Actor Emmett Scanlan has revealed the meaning behind his son’s unusual name.
Last year, Emmett and his Hollyoaks actress wife Claire Cooper welcomed their boy Ocean-Torin.
The star revealed he initially thought of the name Poseidon – but joked that he didn’t want to put him under too much pressure growing up.
He said: “Torin is the Gaelic for ‘chieftain’, so it’s ‘chief of the sea’.
“Like Poseidon. But I didn’t want to put him under pressure by calling him Poseidon. Ocean is a name I’ve been in love with since I was a baba. I knew if I ever had a son, Ocean was the name I wanted to call him. I just love that name.”
But the couple were dealt a devastating blow in July 2019 when they suffered a miscarriage.
Opening up about their heartbreak, Emmett said it was a “terrifying experience”.
He added: “We lost our baby and she [Claire] almost lost her life.
“It was a very, very difficult time, and then Ocean was born, the same month, a year later.”
Speaking to Sunday Independent’s Life magazine, the Peaky Blinders star, 42, also revealed his reason behind leaving Hollyoaks three years after joining the show – saying it was too safe and reliable for him.
The rugged Dubliner is set to star in RTE One’s latest gangland drama, Kin, which airs on September 12.
He said: “The series starts with my character, Jimmy, collecting his younger brother from prison.
“The introduction of this brother back into the family changes everything within that family, and that has echoes outside the family.”
