Activists replace HSBC billboards with spoof adverts calling for an end to 'climate colonialism'

Activists have covered billboards and adverts across the the city demanding HSBC end its investment in fossil fuel projects, detention centres and climate destruction.

Dozens of billboards and bus stops have been "hijacked" in a national grassroots campaign by Brandalism.

The campaign accuses HSBC of funding climate destruction and human rights abuses.

Glasgow has been chosen as a target for the campaign as it will be hosting the United Nations Climate Summit COP26. The event will be the most important round of talks since the global Paris Agreement to tackle climate change was secured in 2015.

Since the time of the Paris Climate Agreement, HSBC have funded £67bn worth of fossil fuels projects, according to a report from NGO 350.org and partners.

The bank have also been accused of "climate colonialism" by activists over their destructive investments, including in gas extraction in Mozambique.

HSBC has recently announced that they will become a “Net Zero Emissions” bank.

Steven Elliot, activist from COP26 campaign group Glasgow Calls Out Polluters said: “HSBC’s conduct since the Paris Agreement has been nothing short of criminal.

"It is ridiculous and cynical for them to assert that they are going “Net Zero” when the evidence shows exactly the opposite. The eyes of the world will be zooming in on Glasgow over the next year and we say that such posturing is not welcome.”

One of the companies that HSBC recently financed was oil company Aker BP ASA, who have subsidiary offices in Glasgow.

Extinction Rebellion Scotland activist Annabel Rodger added: “This is completely unacceptable. We have been encouraging people to make the connections between finance and climate breakdown and as the world’s 12th biggest banker of climate destruction, there are few more responsible than HSBC.

"That a company based in Glasgow is linked to these dodgy deals, shows that Scotland is not always quite the climate leader it claims to be.”

HSBC has been contacted for comment.
