Activists in Glasgow change names of city streets linked to slavery

Streets across Glasgow have been given alternative names following a campaign to remove the mention of slave and plantation owners from the city.

Activists have created their own street names representing civil rights activists and victims of police brutality and placed them below the existing street names.

Glassford Street has been claimed as Fred Hampton Street, Wilson Street has been renamed after Rosa Parks, Cochrane Street now also bares the name of Sheku Bayoh - who died in police custody.

Ingram Street has been renamed Harriet Tubman Street and Buchanan Street has been given the name George Floyd Street.

Howard Street now includes the name of Joseph Knight, a slave in Glasgow who won his freedom in court meaning that slavery was abolished in Scotland.

The new plaques appeared on Friday afternoon, ahead of the Black Lives Matter protest in Glasgow Green on Sunday.

A petition calling for streets that are named after slave owners has garnered over 9,000 signatures.

It reads: "Currently there are many streets in Glasgow which are named after slave owners, such as Glassford Street (John Glassford), Ingram Street (Archibald Ingram) and Buchanan Street (Andrew Buchanan) glorifying the slave owners of the past.

"Such changes have been made in places like Spain who renamed streets previously named after figures from Franco’s fascist regime.

"I think it’s important to take these tobacco lords off the pedestal they seemingly stand on and instead recognise other Scottish activists who are deserving of such esteem."
