Animal rights activists covered themselves in blood-coloured paint in Pamplona on Sunday as the city prepared for the San Fermin Festival.
Some dressed as religious figures, while others held banners reading 'Bullfighting is a sin' and called for an end to bullfighting. Chants of 'San Fermin festivities without cruelty' echoed through the demonstration as campaigners sought to draw attention to the fate of the bulls used during the annual celebrations.
The protest was organised by PETA and the Spanish animal rights group AnimaNaturalis. Activist Brook Spurling said the same bulls that run through Pamplona's streets during the famous event are later killed in the bullring.
He argued that a festival known for music, food and celebration should not include bullfighting.
