Activists block busy Maryhill road by chaining themselves to bicycles outside COP26 dinner

Eco activists blocked a busy road in Maryhill by chaining themselves to bicycles.

Extinction Rebellion were joined by Glasgow Calls Out Polluters to stage the blockade outside a meeting of business executives as part of the Cop26 climate conference.

Pictures from the scene showed a number of people sitting on Lochburn Road area of the city on Monday night as police officers stood nearby, the Daily Record reported.

They held a sign which read: “No fracked gas; no crude oil; stop neocolonial spoil”.

Chants of “make them pay” could be heard from the activists, who targeted the The World Business Council on Sustainable Development dinner.

Raquel Fonseca from Glasgow Calls Out Polluters said: "‘The COP26 in Glasgow has been called one of the most exclusionary ever, and this is not surprising for an event that consistently puts the interests of the rich and powerful first, shamefully ignoring the people actually getting their lives and homes destroyed by the climate collapse brought on by those same agents.

“We must put pressure on them to pay appropriate reparations and not continue on their destructive, selfish path of endless growth and extraction."

Police Scotland confirmed just after midnight that the protest had ended, with 16 arrests made.
