Active shooter reported at New Hampshireapos;s largest hospital, say police

New Hampshire's largest hospital is on lockdown following reports that police are investigating whether there is a potential shooter.

“Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon is currently locked down following reports of an active shooter in the hospital,” the hospital's media relations manager, Mike Barwell, said in a statement.

“We are assessing the situation now, and will have more information as soon as it becomes available. Lebanon and New Hampshire State police have been alerted and are on-site.”

State police say a suspect is in custody in connection to the incident.

The federal bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and Vermont state police assisted New Hampshire and local police.

People were told to avoid the area, and traffic was stopped on a route leading to the hospital. There has been no confirmation of a shooting.

WCAX-TV reported that an employee said all workers received an email from the hospital about a “code silver”, telling them to evacuate if possible or to otherwise shelter in place. “Code silver” indicates that a violent situation is unfolding.

The state attorney general's office is investigating.

Dartmouth College in Hanover, about 6 miles from Lebanon, confirmed that it had “received information that indicates there is an active shooter.”

“Local police departments are on scene. The @DartmouthHitch campus in Lebanon is on lock-down and a shelter in place order has been issued,” the college tweeted from its official account. “The @dartmouth campus is not on lock-down and classes have not been cancelled.”
