'Active and independent' Bristol man died in motorbike crash

A Bristol-born man has died in a motorcycle crash on an American highway.

Stephen John Serle, 41, died after a collision in Georgia on July 29, 2018, an inquest heard.

The engineer, described as “an active and independent person” by son Philip Serle, had made the southeastern state of America his home.

On that day, Stephen had been travelling back from a weekend away with friends in Savannah, Georgia.

He headed home at around 1pm but at around 2.30pm his motorbike collided with a minivan.

The driver of the minivan had been involved in a number of criminal offences.

Stephen was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Christopher Van Stephens of Stephens County Coroner’s said the 41-year-old had suffered a severe hemorrhage caused by blunt force trauma.

At the inquest into Stephen's death, held at Avon Coroner's Court in Flax Bourton yesterday (September 2), coroner Dr Peter Harrowing concluded Stephen died as a result of an RTC.
