'Acting like the big man' Hit-and-run suspect cleared of killing Scots dad filmed boozing behind wheel of BMW

A hit-and-run suspect controversially cleared of killing a dad has been filmed driving a sports car while drinking champagne.

Ryan McLuckie was seen swigging from a bottle of fizz while at the wheel of a high-powered BMW.

The 26-year-old was dramatically cleared of causing the death of Michael Delaney by dangerous driving.

Footage posted on online showed McLuckie, believed to be in Spain’s Marbella, necking vintage Runiart champagne.

The 47-second clip – captioned “That’s ma boy” – sees him leaving a nightclub with pal who has the bottle stuffed down his trousers.

It then cuts to McLuckie drinking while driving.

Michael passed away — aged just 48 — in Monklands Hospital after being found with catastrophic head injuries in April 2014 in Airdrie.

McLuckie, then aged 19, claimed he had found the dad of two lying in the road already hurt and raised the alarm.

But three weeks later, he was charged with causing death by dangerous driving along with a string of other motoring offences, including driving without insurance.

The charge was later reduced to causing death by careless driving – before all charges against him were finally dropped in 2016.

During the police probe, a senior specialist road investigating officer said that, in his opinion, the only vehicle involved in Michael’s death was McLuckie’s.

The Crown Office announced it would change how it carried out road death investigations following criticism over its handling of the case.

Michael’s widow June McLenachan yesterday hit out at McLuckie’s reckless conduct.

She said: “Nothing surprises me about his behaviour and this video only reinforces that belief.

“He thinks he’s above the law.”

A friend of Michael added: “This video shows McLuckie in Marbella drinking champagne, showing off and acting the big man.

“McLuckie has clearly not learned his lesson and does not care about the damage his reckless actions could cause.

“What makes it even worse is the fact he is much older now but is clearly just as irresponsible.

“The actions of these two idiots is deplorable and disgusting and people deserve to know.

“Michael was my friend and I know the devastation his death caused to everyone who knew him least of all his wife and young children.”

Spain has the same strict drink driving laws as Scotland.

Alex Neil, the former MSP for Airdrie and Shotts who stood down earlier this month, previously said the Delaney family had been badly let down by the justice system.

Neil said: “This video is a kick in the teeth for the family of Michael Delaney.

“You would have hoped Mr McLuckie would act more sensibly with his history.

“To drink and drive, as Mr McLuckie appears to do, is completely unacceptable, regardless of what country you are in.

“Too many lives are needlessly lost by idiotic drivers drinking alcohol before getting behind the wheel.”

McLuckie wasn’t avaliable for comment.

But a family member said he was overseas and had been cleared over any wrongdoing over Michael’s death.

She said: “This has been going on for seven years.

“Ryan is innocent and all charges dropped.”

She refused to comment on the video or allegations of drink driving.
