ACT records 992 new cases of COVID

The ACT has reported 992 new cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm Wednesday, up from 810 cases announced the day before.

The new cases bring the active total to 3565.

There are 20 people in hospital because of COVID, with two people in intensive care, and two on ventilation.

Up to 60 patients could be treated in ACT hospitals with COVID from next week, modelling has shown.

The new cases are in addition to a Canberra man in his 20s has died from COVID-19 in a Sydney hospital, despite being fully vaccinated and having no underlying health conditions.

NSW Health on Thursday said the man, who had received two doses of a vaccine, died at St Vincent's Hospital. He was one of six people to die from COVID-19 in the latest reporting period.

There are 18.9 per cent ACT residents aged 18 and over who have received their booster.

NSW reported 34,994 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, while Victoria recorded 21,997 new cases, six deaths and 631 hospitalisations.

The number of hospitalisations in Victoria is the highest in the state since November 6, with 51 of those in ICU and 22 people on a ventilator.

Density limits in indoor spaces are returning to Victoria from Friday.

Queensland has recorded 10,332 new COVID-19 cases and one death in the state's biggest daily surge in infections. Twelve people are in intensive care, including two on ventilators, while 284 patients are in hospital.

Tasmania has recorded 751 new COVID-19 cases.

Meanwhile, a limited number rapid antigen tests are to be free for over six million Australians who hold concession cards. And a positive rapid antigen test will now be considered proof of carrying the virus.
