ACT records 448 new cases on New Year's Day

The ACT has reported 448 new cases of COVID-19 on New Year's Day, in the 24 hours to 8pm on Friday.

The new cases bring the active total to 1479.

The daily record for the ACT was set on New Year's Eve, when 462 cases were recorded.

There are nine people in hospital because of COVID. None of them are in intensive care, and none are being ventilated.

There were 3141 negative tests received in the 24 hours to 9am on Friday, down from 4211 the day prior.

Meanwhile, the percentage of the eligible population who are now fully vaccinated is at 98.5 per cent.

NSW has recorded 22,577 COVID-19 cases and four deaths as the state's largest outbreak continues to surge.

It is another daily case record, surpassing Friday's 21,151.

Four deaths were recorded, while 901 people are hospitalised and 79 are in intensive care.

NSW closed the year recording more infections in one week than it did throughout Delta-induced lockdowns.

Another 7442 COVID-19 infections were found in Victoria for the the final day of 2021, starting the new year with another pandemic record.

It's a jump of more than 1500 cases on Friday's 5919 infections.

Another nine people have died with the virus.

The number of active cases reported in the most-recent 24-hour reporting period sits at 24,161, and 63,026 people were tested.

Meanwhile, 428 COVID-19 cases have emerged in Tasmania, almost doubling active cases on the island state to 938.

The majority of active cases, 224, are being managed at home, while there are 79 people in community management clinics.

Tasmania was free of the virus when it reopened to fully vaccinated travellers from mainland hotspots on December 15.
