Minister 'unaware' of prisoner's escape from Canberra hospital

The ACT Health Minister has admitted she was unaware that a man had escaped from custody at the Canberra Hospital more than a day after he absconded.

Aaron Jones, 31, disappeared from the hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

He was in custody for breaching a court order.

Jones had appeared in court last week and was later transferred to the custody of health officials at the hospital.

It was the second escape from the hospital this month.

Earlier this month a man was arrested in southern NSW after escaping police custody at the Canberra Hospital.

Health Minister Meegan Fitzharris said on Friday morning that she had not been briefed on the latest escape.

"I haven't heard that yet so I'll certainly go back to the office now and get a briefing on that," she said when reporters asked her about the incident.

Ms Fitzharris said she would be acting to make sure the right processes were in place at the hospital.

Corrections Minister Shane Rattenbury said escapes were rare occurrences.

"We have had since January 1, 67 people transferred into mental health custody, so this is not a common incident," he said.

Mr Rattenbury said procedures and physical security would be reviewed but maintained there was not a wider problem.

"Each of them are individual, they do point to the need to tighten up in some areas, but I don't think they are related in having a systemwide problem," he said.

Jones is described as 165 centimetres tall, with a solid build, a shaved head and a tattoo behind his left ear.

The ACT corrections system has seen six men evade custody in the past 18 months. Three of them were being treated at Canberra Hospital at the time.
