The ACT Greens expect to see more party members take ministerial positions in Chief Minister Andrew Barr's next cabinet, after a strong show of support more than doubled their assembly presence.
"With such a strong result and an increase in numbers our members have an expectation of playing a greater role in any arrangement," ACT Greens leader Shane Rattenbury told ABC Radio Canberra on Thursday.
"They expect though to see an increase in Greens ministers in the cabinet, they think we should have that opportunity in light of the increased numbers and change of balance between the Greens and the Labor Party."
The ACT Greens are likely to pick up at least five seats in the Legislative Assembly with a sixth seat still in contention in Brindabella. It will more than double their numbers in parliament from two MLAs last term.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr said on Sunday it was unlikely any of the newly-elected Greens candidates without parliamentary experience would be handed a portfolio.
Although Mr Rattenbury, who held a position in the cabinet last term, could make a return.
Mr Rattenbury said formal discussions between the two parties would begin today and likely continue throughout next week.
He would not disclose which portfolios his party would be pushing to take up.
"There is obviously some commonality between the platforms the Labor Party and the Greens put forward at the election," Mr Rattenbury said.
"We've sat in the same cabinet for the last few years and so we see the same problems.
"We have come up with some different solutions to some of those though and that will be part of this week, to work through what the right answer is."
Mr Rattenbury, who is the only Greens member with parliamentary experience, said despite that his team came from a diverse background and had plenty of "life experience".
