ACT government seeks Canberra Hospital's SPIRE delivery partner

The ACT government is calling for expressions of interest from companies to help deliver the half-billion dollar SPIRE expansion project at the Canberra Hospital.

According to the Health Directorate website the project will deliver 148 new inpatient beds, 22 operating theatres, 114 emergency treatment spaces, new radiology and medical imaging facilities among other additions.

The almost 40,000-square-metre addition will be procured under an early contractor involvement model where contractors will work with government to design and deliver the project.

Health minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said, "The [project] presents a unique opportunity for industry to be part of one of the largest health infrastructure projects ever undertaken by the ACT government."

"We will work with our chosen partner to achieve excellence in design; teaming the latest advances in technology and construction to enhance the quality of healthcare available to all Canberrans.

"Ongoing consultation with clinicians, consumers and local residents will be a critical part of the process over the course of 2020, to ensure we deliver the best possible outcome for the Canberra community."

In August, it was reported that until June only one dedicated staff member within the directorate was working on the SPIRE project.

Since announcing the project the scope and completion date have blown out significantly.

Expressions of interest close on Thursday, December 19 and the delivery partner is expected to be announced in mid-2020.
