ACT goes another 24 hours without new COVID-19 cases

The ACT has gone another day without a new confirmed case of coronavirus.

It has now been eight days since a new case has been diagnosed in Canberra, with the total still standing at 107.

The death toll remains at three.

The ACT remains the only jurisdiction in the country where there are no known active cases of coronavirus.

More than 400 negative tests of the virus were recorded in the past 24 hours alone, taking the total number of negatives to more than 12,200.

It comes after the testing criteria for coronavirus were expanded even further last week. Anyone with a sudden onset of a loss of smell, loss of taste, runny nose, muscle pain, joint pain, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting or a loss of appetite is now able to be tested.

While some coronavirus restrictions have been relaxed since Saturday, the ACT's chief health officer Dr Kerryn Coleman said it was important for Canberrans to remain vigilant when out in public.

"I have said on numerous occasions, failing to follow the physical distancing and social gathering restrictions can undermine all of our hard work very quickly," Dr Coleman said.

"I want us all to remain focused on our personal responsibility to comply with these requirements and on maintaining good hand and respiratory hygiene to prevent a new wave of COVID-19 in the ACT."

Tuesday saw NSW also record zero new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, the first time since the outbreak of the virus in Australia that the milestone was reached.

In the ACT, gatherings of no more than 10 people in the home or in outdoor areas are permitted.

Dr Coleman said now was not the time to lose focus in combating the virus.

"As we've seen overseas, it only takes one mistake or lapse in concentration from the community to result in a new outbreak," she said.
