Canberra firefighters could soon be on the way to help tackle blazes in the United States, as the ACT considers a call for help from California.

California requested a team of 55 specialist fire fighters from Australia to assist efforts to contain hundreds of wildfires.

The ACT Emergency Services Agency is considering whether they will send firefighters abroad to help the US effort.

It is understood New South Wales and Western Australia may also contribute to the 55-person team.

The blazes, which began on August 15, were ignited by thousands of lighting strikes during a heat wave across northern and central California.

At least seven people have died and more than 1400 homes and buildings have been destroyed.

Crews from half a dozen states have helped fight about 24 major blazes.

When fires ravaged Australia's east coast in January, California's firefighters joined forces with Australian emergency services.
