ACT adds high-risk LGAs, eight new cases

The ACT has recorded another single-digit day of new COVID-19 cases, with eight infections detected in the past reporting period.

It comes as the territory government declared six new local council areas in NSW and Victoria as high-risk areas, the new designation coming into effect at 11.59pm on Friday.

The new high-risk areas include East Gippsland, Mitchell Shire, Moira and Mornington Peninsula areas in Victoria, along with Federal and Warrumbungle Shire locations in NSW.

The declaration means anyone who has visited the high-risk areas in the past 14 days and enters the ACT will need to apply for an exemption.

While fully vaccinated travellers will be automatically exempt, those who are not double-dosed will be required to undergo stay-at-home orders until 14 days after leaving the high-risk area.

The government has removed 14 local government areas from the list of high-risk sites, which now stands at 29 locations.

Meanwhile, the number of hospitalisations in Canberra due to COVID-19 has remained stable at seven.

However, more people are being treated for the virus in intensive care, with that figure now at four, all of whom are on a ventilator.

After several days of high testing levels, the number of negative tests dropped back below 2000 with 1715 conducted in the 24 hours to 9am on Friday.

The level of fully vaccinated people over 12 in the national capital now stands at 97.6 per cent.

There are 175 active COVID-19 cases in the community.
