Achraf Lazaar's agent on his Newcastle United future and his loan switch to Cosenza Calcio

The agent of Newcastle United defender Achraf Lazaar has spoken out on the defender's future on Tyneside.

Lazaar completed a season-long loan switch to Serie B side Cosenza Calcio earlier this month, after he missed out on Steve Bruce's 25-man Premier League squad.

The Morocco international has only made 10 appearances for the Magpies since being signed by Rafa Benitez in August 2016 - the last coming in the Carabao Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest two years ago.

The left-back remains under contract at St James' Park until 2021, and agent Roberto De Fanti has spoken with Italian website Tutto Mercato Web about his client's future in the North East.

De Fanti refused to be drawn on the reasons why Lazaar's Newcastle move had not worked out, insisting they would both sit down with Magpies' chiefs at the end of the season.

He said: "It is useless to look at the past. Making a conspiracy is easy, but let's look ahead.

"We still have a contract year at Newcastle, it expires in 2021.

"At the end of the season we will sit down with them and decide what to do: in this moment in his and our thoughts there is only being protagonist in Cosenza."

Lazaar has spent time out on loan at Benevento during their Serie A campaign, and with Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship for the second-half of last season.

De Fanti added the desire from Cosenza Calcio - who finished 10th in Italy's second tier last season - to sign the left-back was a huge factor in Lazaar's decision.

The defender's agent finished: "He spent a period where, willy-nilly, he played little.

"He needed a square that could guarantee him continuity and the desire with which Cosenza requested it and treated it made the difference in the boy's head".
