An accused would-be gunman was allegedly caught with two Glock pistols before he was charged with being part of a foiled underworld murder plot.

Azam El-Mohamad was arrested in December on gun and drugs charges before being charged in January with conspiracy to murder and participating in a criminal group.

The 30-year-old is in custody and was not required to appear when his case was mentioned in Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday.

The target of the alleged $400,000 contract hit has not been publicly revealed, with police only saying the two men charged over the purported plot did not personally know the intended target.

The pair were not believed to be members of the organised crime groups whose dispute fuelled the commission of a murder, investigators previously said.

Court documents describe the conspiracy as an agreement to "murder a male within the Sydney CBD".

El-Mohamad was allegedly in possession of two Glock pistols and more than 50g of the drug GHB when he was arrested at Waterloo in Sydney's inner south on December 29.

The pistols were allegedly unregistered and El-Mohamad had allegedly violated a firearms prohibition order by possessing them.

His lawyer told the court on Wednesday the gun and murder conspiracy charges were linked.

The court heard the Director of Public Prosecutions was set to take over the matter but were yet to review material in the case.

El-Mohamad's matter was adjourned until March for service of a brief of evidence.
