A Melbourne man has faced court charged with stalking and threatening to kill his victims via Facebook messages and train station graffiti.

Paul Ryan, 28, appeared at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday on 35 charges including producing child abuse material, stalking and issuing multiple threats to sexually assault and kill.

Court documents allege Ryan, from Albion in Melbourne's west, wrote violent threats to sexually assault or kill his victims on train stations and bus shelters at Roxburgh Park, Coolaroo, Lalor and Reservoir.

Police accuse him of "sending a series of threatening and abusive Facebook messages and graffiti (on) public transport property with explicit and threatening messages" with the intention to cause harm "including self-harm", the documents say.

Ryan was also charged with property damage in relation to the defaced train stations and bus shelters.

The charges against him span alleged offending over October, November and early December 2020.

He appeared in court via video link from Broadmeadows Police Station on Friday and did not apply for bail.

His lawyer Louis Robertson said the man had an intellectual disability.

Ryan is scheduled to face court again on April 2.
