Accused opal thieves extradited to Sydney

Two men have been extradited from Melbourne to Sydney over the theft of precious stones in February. (AAP)

Two men accused of stealing opals worth half a million dollars in a NSW home invasion in February have been nabbed interstate.

Police found a "substantial quantity" of opals in a car after pulling over the two men in Melbourne's St Kilda on Wednesday.

The men, 28 and 27, were extradited to Sydney on Friday and will face court on Saturday.

Four people broke into a Lake Illawarra home shortly after 1am on a February morning, demanding opals from the occupant's personal collection.

A 46-year-old man and 26-year-old woman complied and handed over the precious stones.

Police say they're worth more than $500,000.
