A neo-Nazi accused of sending harassing emails and making an abusive phone call to Senator Lidia Thorpe has briefly faced court.

Stefan Eracleous, 32, was charged by Australian Federal Police last week with one count of using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence to the parliamentarian.

Police allege Eracleous sent multiple harassing emails to Senator Thorpe, before escalating to an abusive phone call, between October 2 and November 14.

The phone call allegedly included "hateful and menacing rhetoric", AFP said.

He is further accused of defacing a flag at Ms Thorpe's electoral office.

The allegations followed an AFP national security investigation probe which began earlier in November.

Eracleous, who reportedly has ties to neo-Nazi group the National Socialist Network, faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday for a brief hearing where upcoming dates were set.

Prosecutors asked for until January 8 to compile their brief of evidence before serving it on defence.

No changes were made to Eracleous' bail conditions and he will return to court at 2pm on February 19 for a committal mention.

Asked if he understood his bail conditions, which were not aired in court, Eracleous replied: "Yes, Your Honour."

If found guilty, the offence carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
