A driver accused of fleeing after hitting and killing a cyclist on Victoria's Great Alpine Road wants prosecutors to tell him why he shouldn't drive while on bail.
Andrew Sandy, 25, is charged with dangerous driving causing the death of a 62-year-old cyclist who was struck while riding near Cobungra on Saturday morning.
Sandy is also accused of failing to stop and failing to render assistance to the man, who died at the scene.
Police released Sandy on bail on a condition that he not drive at all, but on Wednesday prosecutors agreed to a request by his lawyer Ruth Parker for him to be able to drive for work purposes.
She told Bairnsdale Magistrates Court that Sandy ran a rural contracting business and driving was his job.
He is allowed to drive during work hours Monday to Friday only.
But prosecutors opposed her request that Sandy be allowed to drive on weekends and for reasons including grocery shopping.
Ms Parker said the difficulty was that Sandy lived rurally and alone.
"Unless police can demonstrate why he should be barred from driving, except for work, there should not be a prohibition on him driving while on bail," she said.
The magistrate said a further application could be made at a later date.
Sandy is due back in court for a committal mention on June 29.
