Accused Family Court bomber runs out of money to pay lawyers

A man accused of four high-profile murders and a string of bombings in the 1980s has run out of money to fund his defence, a Sydney court has heard.

NSW Supreme Court Justice Peter Garling has heard an application to put a stay on the trial of Leonard John Warwick, whose lawyers have indicated they can no longer represent him.

Mr Warwick, now 72, has pleaded not guilty to 24 charges — including four murders — and the bombing of two judges' homes, a court in Parramatta and a Jehovah's Witness hall in Casula between 1980 and 1985.

He is accused of crimes that include shooting Justice David Opas dead in the judge's front yard, and shooting his own brother-in-law.

The prosecution case is that his crimes were motivated by a dispute with his wife and that they were premeditated crimes involving extreme violence.

Justice Garling today determined that the trial should resume hearing evidence on March 11.

But he told the court he had not yet formed a view either way on Mr Warwick's application for a stay on the trial.

Justice Garling acknowledged Mr Warwick's financial situation and asked all the parties involved to make further submissions to him.

"He does not have legal representation and to proceed without legal representation would render the trial potentially unfair," Justice Garling said.

"The interests of the administration of justice do not permit an unlimited adjournment."

The court has previously heard that Mr Warwick does not have access to legal aid because his wife has refused to put up their family home as surety.

Mr Warwick, who appeared in court via video link, remains in custody.
