Accused doctor Jeremy Coleman's re-trial over alleged sex assault moved to Sydney

ACCUSED: Dr Jeremy Coleman will face a trial in Sydney's District Court.

NEWCASTLE doctor Jeremy Coleman's re-trial on unresolved counts of sexual and indecent assault relating to former patients will be moved to Sydney, after his marathon first trial ended with 50 acquittals last year.

The general physician was found not guilty of 50 counts of sexual and indecent assault in September after the city's longest criminal trial.

But after deliberating for an exhausting 36 days, the jury could not reach unanimous or majority verdicts on the remaining 16 counts.

Those 16 counts were mentioned in Newcastle District Court on Thursday, when Crown prosecutor Paul Marr confirmed again that there would be a re-trial on the outstanding charges.

But this second trial will be heard in Sydney, the court heard, with Judge Roy Ellis adjourning the matter to Sydney Downing Centre District Court on November 8 to get a trial date.

The matter had a trial date in Newcastle in May, 2020, but the estimated length of the trial and the volume of cases in Newcastle made it hard to accommodate.
