Accused denies Waratah Village double stabbing

INVESTIGATION: Police set-up a crime scene after the second stabbing in three days at Waratah.

A MAN accused of stabbing a man and his partner on two separate occasions three days apart in the car park of Waratah Village will face a trial in Newcastle District Court.

Jack Fynn, 21, was represented by solicitor Kristy Wade when he appeared in Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday via audio visual link from the Metropolitan Reception and Remand Centre. Mr Fynn pleaded not guilty to two counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and two alternative counts of reckless wounding and the matter was adjourned to Newcastle District Court next month for Mr Fynn to get a trial date. Mr Fynn had previously raised a defence of not guilty by reason of mental illness.

According to police, Mr Fynn allegedly stabbed a man, 38, in the car park of the shopping centre on Turton Road at Waratah about 8.45pm on June 18 last year.

The man suffered cuts to his forearm and was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

In a separate incident three days later, Mr Fynn allegedly stabbed a woman, 26, in the same car park. The woman was with the 38-year-old man at the time of the second stabbing and it is believed the pair had returned to the car park to pick up the man's car after the first stabbing.

The woman suffered a stab wound to her arm and was taken to John Hunter Hospital where she underwent surgery.

Police, believing the two stabbings were linked and targeted, arrested Mr Fynn at a home at Waratah on June 23.
