Accused boy driver granted bail two weeks before crash that killed four teens

The scene of the accident in which four teenagers died.

A boy who has been charged with dangerous driving causing the death of four teenagers in North Queensland was granted bail less than two weeks before the horrific crash.

The 14-year-old was allegedly driving a stolen car in Townsville when it crashed and killed three girls and a boy on June 7.

On Tuesday a court heard the teenager, who cannot be identified, had been charged with a total of nine offences, including those for which he had been granted bail before the crash.

He was charged with attempted burglary in late March.

On May 25, he was charged with stealing a mountain bike and mobile phone at James Cook University.

A magistrate on Tuesday revoked the boy's bail on those three charges.

The boy was remanded in custody on all charges.

The charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle in relation to the crash was amended in court to include an allegation he was "excessively speeding" at the time of the offence.

The magistrate allowed the media to be present for the proceedings, saying he was taking into account "extensive reporting" of the crash.

"There is a significant public interest in this proceeding and its outcome," he said.

The police prosecutor sought an eight-week adjournment, saying it was unclear when the brief of evidence would be complete.

The matter was adjourned until August.
