Accrol: Everything you need to know about the toilet roll-making giant

It's likely that we have all seen Accrol's products in the likes of Tesco, Aldi, Morrisons, Bookers and Wilko's but you might be unfamiliar with the brand itself.

Suppling supermarkets and retailers with some of their own-brand tissue products, including toilet roll, kitchen towels and facial tissues., the company's name is absent from labels on the shelves.

However, Accrol is one of the largest businesses in Lancashire and has been expanding significantly over the last few years.

So, how much do you know about one of the most successful companies in Lancashire?

Here, BusinessLive lifts the lid of the AIM-listed group which has experienced rapid growth over recent years.

History

Accrol Papers was established in 1993 by the Hussain family in Accrington, Lancashire.

The business achieved sales of over £1m in its first full year of trading despite a very small manual production facility and what the company has described as a "severe lack" of capital funding.

The firm relocated to neighbouring Blackburn three years later and to its present location in 2004 with a purpose built 65,000 sq ft factory and warehouse and the installation of new production lines.

In 2014, Accrol achieved sales of more than £100m and its current site had grown to over 350,000 sq ft factory and warehouse space.

The business remained in private family ownership until 2014 when it secured a £66m investment from NorthEdge Capital in 2014. leading to it being floated on the London Stock Exchange's AIM in 2016.

At that time, the Hussain family stepped back from their day to day roles in order to hand over to the new executive team.

Expanding the business

The group has been busy in recent year acquiring a range of business all over the UK.

In April 2021 Accrol announced it had acquired Welsh wet wipe maker John Dale in a deal worth almost £4m.

Accrol said at the time that the move into high growth products within the wet wipes segment of the tissue market, provided a "well-invested platform on which to build a sizeable business".

That deal followed a near £42m move in November 2020 for a Leicester-based firm.

Leicester Tissue Company supplies to more than 27 countries, and specialises in paper making and converting paper reels into a variety of tissue-based products.

Who owns Accrol Group?

Being listed on AIM, the group has a number of large investors.

The company with the biggest stake is Schroder Investment Management with 11.6%. The firm can trace its roots back to 1804 and employs more than 5,000 people across the world.

The second largest shareholder is Premier Miton with 10% while NorthEdge Capital is third with an 8.83% stake.

NorthEdge Capital is headquartered in Manchester and its other investments include Total Fitness, Clearly Drinks and The Belfield Group.

Other major investors in Accrol Group include Ruffer, Cannacord Genuity, Gresham House, Merian Global Investors, Pitchcroft, Lombard Odier Asset Management, Killik Asset Management, Blackrock Investment Management and Axa Investment Management.

The board room

Sitting at the head of the board room table is executive chairman Daniel Wright.

Mr Wright has held the role since February 2018 having previously been a non-executive director since December 2017.

He was previously the founder partner, chief operating officer and head of portfolio at NorthEdge Capital.

The group's chief executive is Gareth Jenkins who was appointed in September 2017.

Prior to joining, Mr Jenkins was UK and Ireland managing director at DS Smith.

Richard Newman is Accrol's chief financial officer and first took up the position in February 2021.

He has previously held roles with the likes of DS Smith, National Express, Cadbury and PwC.

Euan Hamilton and Simon Allport are the group's two independent non-executive directors.
