Acclaimed Bristol street artist Inkie leads graffiti workshop at youth club

Young people in some of Bristol's most deprived areas were treated to a graffiti workshop led by a renowned street artist.

The Broad Plain Riverside Youth Project, which provides opportunities through art and sport for young people, welcomed Inkie who mentored Bristol’s next generation of street artists on Wednesday.

The Bristol artist taught youngsters the art of spray painting and watched on as they created their own compositions, inspired by the artwork on display at the Vanguard exhibition at M Shed.

Vanguard, in partnership with Vans, has been leading a programme of art and skateboarding workshops running alongside the exhibition, which is on show until October 31.

The exhibition has been working with Broad Plain Riverside Youth Project, giving its students a private tour of the exhibition as well as a masterclass with renowned Bristol street artist Inkie.

Mary McCarthy, Project Director at Vanguard, said: “Vanguard and Vans share the belief that street art and skateboard culture continue to be powerful tools for community empowerment and meaningful social change, allowing us to reclaim public spaces, amplify marginalised voices, and reimagine the environment around us.

“These workshops and the artistic interventions which we are planning across the city will engage with young people and communities to give them a voice.”

The Broad Plain Riverside Youth Project is no stranger to the artist community giving back to it, as in 2014 Banksy painted Mobile Lovers on Clement Street near to the venue and donated the piece to the club to raise funds to save it from closure.

Broad Plain’s young people created their own version of Mobile Lovers at the youth club and on Monday they were able to see the original piece for the first time.

Adult tickets for Vanguard Bristol Street Art: The Evolution of a Global Movement cost £8 while it's £7 for concessions. Tickets include a £1 voluntary donation to the Bristol Museums Development Trust.
