Accies chief says Jamie Hamilton has been 'unlucky' with red cards

Hamilton Accies chairman Allan Maitland says defender Jamie Hamilton has been unlucky to receive four red cards in his career so far.

The 18-year-old was sent off 12 minutes into the 2-0 defeat at Hibs on Saturday after being shown a straight red card by referee Craig Napier for a challenge on Martin Boyle.

After the New Douglas Park club appealed, that was downgraded to a yellow, which Maitland was pleased with.

Hamilton has now been sent off four times; his first was for a controversial hand-ball in a 3-1 home defeat against Motherwell on August 24, 2019, with the ball striking him.

His second came for a foul on Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths during a 4-1 home defeat on February 2, 2020, with the Scotland international perhaps fortunate to escape punishment earlier for a 'stamp' on Sam Woods.

The third was another controversial moment, a handball while chasing possession with Hearts' Liam Boyce as Hamilton led 2-0 at Tynecaste on February 15, 2020, which was also rescinded.

Maitland said: "I feel that Jamie has been really unlucky.

"He has had four sending offs in his young career, one was a handball against Motherwell, which came off the top of his arm.

"The second one was against Celtic for a foul on Leigh Griffiths, and we all had our thoughts on whether Griffiths should have been on the park at the time.

"The one against Hearts was so unlucky and was rescinded, and the one on Saturday was unlucky, and was rescinded.

"It looks as though he has had a lot, but in actual fact he has been very, very unfortunate, so I'm delighted that the panel saw it that way and the decision has been reversed."
