Accies boss says new signings aren't worth it if they won't be ready to play

Hamilton boss Brian RIce says he's unlikely to make any more signings, because anybody he does bring in needs to be ready now.

Rice says if someone 'sticks out' they will look at it, but the time they would need to get a new players up to speed means it wouldn't be worth it.

But he says returning players like Scott Martin, Shaun Want and Nathan Thomas will give his squad a boost, and hopes winger Lewis Smith will get game-time before the end of this season.

When asked if there might be any more signings, Rice said: "I don't think so at the moment.

"We're looking about and whoever we bring in needs to be ready to go, there's no point in bringing somebody in who hasn't had a club for three, four or five months, because of the time it takes you to get them up to speed.

"We have Scott Martin and Nathan Thomas coming back from injury, Shaun Want is coming back from injury shortly, so there will be a few faces who haven't been in the squad for a while because of injury.

"Hopefully Lewis Smith can get some game-time in before the end of the season as well.

"Once these boys come back, the squad will be stronger, it will be bigger, so unless someone turns up who really sticks out and we think it's worth it, but that's unlikely."

Rice added: "It's going to be massive, getting these guys back. They'll be desperate to get back playing football, they've missed a lot of the season, they've missed a lot of game-time.

"It will bring a freshness, and it will definitely help, because these are first-team players coming back, these are boys who have experience of playing in the Premiership.

"Nathan Thomas is an experienced football player, so the quicker we get them back the better, but we can't rush them in case they break back down again.

"We've had loads of injuries this season, and it has been all first-team players. The lads that have played for most of the season have done remarkably well to keep going, and the one or two we've brought in, Bruce Anderson coming in, and Aaron Martin has been fantastic, but we've just got to keep battling away and hopefully we'll get these injured players back sooner rather than later."

One player who departed the club earlier this month was defensive midfielder Will Collar, who was released by mutual consent after just under two years at the club.

Collar has since signed for Stockport County, but Rice didn't anticipate seeing the 24-year-old back in action any time soon.

He said: "Will had a few injury issues, he has been breaking down, coming back, and breaking down, and the boy's contract was up at the end of the season.

"We had a discussion, and it was highly unlikely that we could renew his contract because of his injury history, but we wanted to give him every opportunity to get back playing this season.

"Will felt as though he couldn't get back; he was down about breaking down, he felt that he was letting a lot of people down - which he definitely wasn't - it was just very unfortunate.

"But he came to the decision that he would prefer to go back down south, try to get himself fit, and his main aim is next season.

"He has signed for Stockport, but it's going to be a wee while before Will can actually play.

"He's a really good footballer and it's a shame for him, the amount of injuries he had."

This evening's Premiership match at Livingston has been called off due to heavy snow, and Rice admits that might cause a fixtures back-log.

He's also disappointed not to have a chance to carry the momentum from a great result and performance in the 1-1 draw with Rangers on Sunday.

He said: "I'm really disappointed that the game is off because we've got a fixtures back-log and we want to get it started, to get these games played.

"It was a good performance on Sunday and we were hopeful that we could carry it on to tonight.

"We took all the plaudits on Sunday but that's in the past. Tonight would have been really tough, playing against a completely different team and style of play, so I'm just disappointed, because we were ready to go and everything was set up to play."
