Accies beat Rangers because gaffer got it right, says Lewis Smith

Lewis Smith says Hamilton boss Brian Rice got his tactics spot-on when they beat Rangers 1-0 back in March, and hopes they can do the same today at New Douglas Park.

Accies clash with Steven Gerrard's men in a 5.30pm kick-off this evening, looking to build on their first three points of the season, a 1-0 derby win at Motherwell last weekend.

Smith said that win at Ibrox, courtesy of David Moyo's late strike, was probably deserved for how hard Hamilton had worked that day.

Speaking on the Only Accies podcast, Smith said: "When we go into games against Celtic and Rangers we're not stupid, we know it's going to be a shift, but sometimes that gives you that 'no fear' aspect.

"In that game at Ibrox we played two up top, which not many teams would do at all going there, and it worked out for us.

"The gaffer told us before the game that if we got to half-time at 0-0 we would have a chance of taking something from the game, because the crowd would get on their backs, confidence will rise and stuff like that, and he was absolutely right.

"He then told us at half-time that if we got through the next 15 minutes we could win the game, obviously we did that, and David Moyo grabbed the famous goal.

"It was just a weird day, because Rangers had chances, but it didn't feel like they were going to score. Our goalkeeper, Luke Southwood, was brilliant that day and everyone played well. It was one of those great team efforts."

Although everyone at Accies was ecstatic with the win, Smith says they didn't have time to celebrate.

"It was brilliant that they won, but there was also a wee bit of relief," he said. "We couldn't properly celebrate, because we had a game on Saturday against Kilmarnock.

"The mood in the changing room was great and the bus journey back was a good laugh, but as soon as we were back in on Thursday morning that was it done, and we had to forget about it.

"We then played against Killie on the Saturday and it was a gritty performance and a late penalty winner, but it was such an important win - it turned out to be absolutely vital."
