‘Accidentally told the truth for once’: Donald Trump says that it is ‘standard’ for Steve Witkoff to be coaching Russians to ‘appeal’ to him

Donald Trump probably shouldn’t have said what he did during a recent press interaction, but now it’s too late. People on the internet are now nearly convinced that Trump accidentally disclosed important secrets about the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

While on Air Force One recently, Donald Trump was asked by a journalist to comment on the audio that has been circulating of Steve Witkoff “coaching” Russians on how to “appeal” to him. He stated that he hadn’t heard it, but he claimed that Witkoff’s behaviour in this context was “standard” because the aim was to “sell this to Ukraine,” adding that “he’s got to sell Ukraine to Russia.” He continued by highlighting that Witkoff was doing in this situation is how dealmakers operate to convince the parties they need to persuade to achieve desired outcomes. Trump referred to it as a “standard form of negotiation” and said that he imagined that Witkoff conveyed the same message to Ukraine because “each party has to give and take.”

Donald Trump’s comments about Steve Witkoff’s remarks have received significant criticism, especially on social media platforms. On X (formerly Twitter), one person wrote:

“Yes, he’s got to sell Ukraine to russia. I think trump accidentally told the truth for once.”

Another individual delved deeper into the issue by analysing Trump’s words and pointing out their implications, and highlighted:

“So Trump’s defense is: “I didn’t hear the tape, but it’s totally normal for my guy to coach the Russians on how to get what they want from me.” Read that again. A U.S. presidential envoy got caught workshopping Russia’s talking points, and Trump calls it “standard negotiation.” Only in TrumpWorld is collaboration rebranded as diplomacy. And this line …..“He’s got to sell Ukraine to Russia.”That isn’t negotiation. That’s auctioning off a democracy to the country that invaded it. You don’t “sell” a sovereign nation unless you’ve already chosen the buyer.”
