Accident hotspot to be changed from 60mph to 30mph

The road leading to a bridge that is notorious for collisions has seen its speed limit halved.

The Vulcan railway bridge on Alder Root Lane, Newton-le-Willows, has seen a series of accidents involving vans and other large vehicles crashing into the low bridge. Previously a National Speed Limit road, concerns were raised about drivers potentially approaching the bridge at 60mph and colliding with it.

The issue has been discussed by both St Helens and Warrington councils, with Newton-le-Willows councillor Seve Gomez-Aspron reportedly pushing for a reduced speed limit of 30mph- to match the adjoining Wargrave Road.

National Speed Limits are in place on many rural roads across the UK, limiting the speed of road users to 60mph, however many feel that these need to be re-evaluated due to many of the roads not being suitable for such high speeds.

Cllr Gomez-Aspron told the ECHO: "Working with our neighbours in Warrington Council, we asked for a package of schemes to be put together to reduce the risk of people colliding with the Network Rail owned Bridge in Winwick.

"Changing the rural road to 30mph ensures that traffic approaching the village, and in the opposite direction towards the golf course should be slower and safer for pedestrians.

"The Warrington section will be changed to 30mph too in the very near future to compliment the extra signs already installed”.

Commenting on the change in speed limit on a Facebook post, Beverley Whitehead said: "Yeah it’s ridiculous! Thankfully it’s finally being changed!"

Derek Jones said: "Shouldn’t be on the road if you don’t know the speed limits."

Johny Clayton said: "So they can now see the sign that says low bridge."
