Access to clean water is a daily struggle in Venezuela

Day-to-day living in Venezuela has become increasingly difficult for large parts of the population as the political stalemate continues. Soaring inflation and crumbling infrastructure mean that even getting clean water is a struggle.

At the edge of a highway in Caracas, queues of people line up every day to fill up their bottles with water at a mountain spring. Clean water has become a scarce and expensive resource as Venezuela's crisis deepens.

FRANCE 24 reporters found that the shortage of clean water is one of the factors that's been pushing people onto the streets to protest against President Nicolas Maduro.

Opponents accuse Venezuelan authorities of deliberately failing to repair the dilapidated infrastructure in neighbourhoods known to be in favour of the opposition. Politically mixed areas such as the slum of La Cruz are also badly affected by these shortages.
