Accept women as equal: Kerala governor Arif Mohammed Khan

KOZHIKODE: Continuing his proactive approach against the dowry menace and atrocities against women, governor Arif Mohammed Khan on Friday visited the house of Moosa Kutty at Mampad in Malappuram, who had committed suicide anguished over the dowry harassment faced by her daughter.

Khan said that the atrocities against women can be addressed by creating a mindset which does not consider them as inferior but accept them as equal.

The governor said that girls and their families should be bold enough to say ‘No’ to proposals when dowry and other unjust demands are raised.

“We have laws, we have very good police. Yet these things are happening because laws and police come into picture only after a crime has been committed. We can prevent the crimes only if you create a mindset which does not consider women as inferior,” he said.

The governor consoled the family members and spoke to Moosa Kutty’s 20-year-old daughter Hiba, who had to face torture and harassment from her in-laws.
