AC Milan suffer major injury blow before Liverpool visit as Ballon d'Or star has surgery

AC Milan defender Simon Kjaer has undergone major surgery after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Genoa on Wednesday.

Milan ran out 3-0 winners but the victory was overshadowed by the loss to key defender Kjaer in the third minute.

The Danish star suffered an ACL injury and had surgery on Friday, ruling him out for the next six months.

“Milan confirms that Simon Kjær underwent arthroscopic surgery today to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament and reinsert the medial collateral ligament in his left knee,” a statement on their website said on Friday.

“The operation, which was carried out at the Casa di Cura La Madonnina clinic, was a perfect success, with Dr. Roberto Pozzoni performing it with the help of the CTS (Centro di Traumatologia dello Sport – Sports Traumatology Centre) team from the Galeazzi Orthopaedic Institute in the presence of Club doctor Stefano Mazzoni.

“Kjær is doing well and is eager to begin the rehabilitation process immediately. He’s expected to be out for six months.”

Kjaer finished 18th in the Ballon d'Or rankings this week after a stellar season, including playing a vital role in Denmark's 2020 European Championship semi-final run where they lost to England 2-1 in injury time.

Liverpool have comfortably qualified for the knockout stages of UEFA's flagship club competition and are likely to rest key players midweek as they prepare for a challenging festive period.

But with Milan needing a win to progress out of Group B, they take on a rampant Reds side without a key defender.
