AC Milan goalkeeper 'injured by Mohamed Salah penalty' in Liverpool Champions League tie undergoes surgery

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan has undergone surgery on a wrist injury sustained in their Champions League meeting with Liverpool last month.

The 26-year-old was signed as Gianluigi Donnarumma's replacement this summer and has been a standout performer for the Rossoneri this season.

Maignan saved a penalty from Mohamed Salah in the 3-2 group stage match at Anfield in September.

According to Football Italia, the shot-stopper fell awkwardly after palming away Salah's effort to keep the visitor's in the game.

Despite concerns over the injury, Maignan has started every single one of AC Milan's matches since, which included four Serie A games and a Champions League match against Atletico Madrid.

They're now set to be without their No.1 for a period of time, after he underwent a procedure to fix the problem.

Sky in Italy revealed on Tuesday that Maignan was set for an arthroscopy, a type of keyhole surgery, after persistent pain in his left wrist.

According to reports in Italy, the goalkeeper could be sidelined anywhere from a couple of weeks to two months.

In response to the developments, AC Milan have moved for 38-year-old Antonio Mirante on a free transfer after his release from Roma in the summer.

Liverpool face AC Milan in their final Champions League group stage match in early December and Maignan faces a race against time to be fit for the meeting.
