AC Milan and Inter reveal new stadium plans as 'Cathedral' design set to replace iconic San Siro

Italian giants Milan and Inter have unveiled huge plans for an innovative new stadium to replace the iconic San Siro.

The ambitious project titled 'The Cathedral', will also include 50,000 sqm dedicated to sport and leisure. It is still in an early development stage, with plans set to be finalised at some point next year.

The new San Siro has been designed by Populous' Milan office, supported by EMEA in London.

The new stadium, which will also be carbon neutral, is a celebration of Milan's cultural and artistic history, and its design was inspired by two of the city's most famous buildings, the Duomo di Milano and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele.

A district will be created around 'The Cathedral' with an underground car park and both indoor and outdoor sporting and leisure facilities which will generate job opportunities in the area as well as a boom in a key urban part of the city.

The bitter Serie A rivals have pledged their support to the innovate project which they believe will be totally unique and unlike any sporting stadium in the world.

The plan is to open the new stadium in 2027.

AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni said: "The new San Siro will be the most beautiful stadium in the world for its strong identity and recognisability.

"An attractive arena, accessible and sustainable for the city of Milan that will facilitate the growth of the clubs and their global competitiveness."

Alessandro Antonello, Corporate CEO of Inter Milan added: "The New Stadium of Milan will be in an extra-contemporary green area that can be lived all year round.

"The new district for sport and leisure and its 50,000sqm park will make San Siro the go-to neighbourhood for sport and entertainment."
