Abyssal Spider: Viewers left terrified by promotion of Taiwanese monster thriller film

Viewers have been left terrified – and intrigued – by promotional materials for an upcoming monster thriller titled Abyssal Spider.

The movie, by Taiwanese director Joe Chien, will be released on 11 September.

It tells the story of a cast of characters trapped on a boat and attacked by a giant, arachnoid sea monster.

Based on the promotion so far, the plot is a metaphor for nature getting revenge on those who destroy it, making Abyssal Spider an eco-thriller.

Social media users reacted in an appropriately spooked manner after the first trailer and two posters were unveiled for the film.

“Is 2020 not bad enough? Now we get giant spiders,” one person tweeted.

“Guys. My two biggest fears are spiders and the ocean. I wish this movie luck and success because I will never be able to see it ever,” someone else wrote.

Another person chimed in: “WTF is this – since when did someone get into my nightmares and produce a film ?!”

The movie generated so much chatter that screenwriter Nelson Yan waded into the conversation, writing: “We can’t tell too much about the monster in this film at this moment but I can promise you guys that we have both small and giant spiders.”
