'Abusive' daughter's 'swearing and money demands' leaves mum close to eviction

An "abusive" daughter turned up "shouting and swearing" and demanding money from her mum who was close to being evicted due to complaints, a court heard.

Natasha Walters, aged 33, has been fined £50 for harassing her mum after turning up at her home in Northwood, Stoke-on-Trent, and was heard "shouting and swearing" at her while wanting money.

She had stayed in an outbuilding at the back of her mum's home when she was homeless and her behaviour led to complaints from neighbours leading to threats of eviction from the council.

Walters has also been handed a 12 month community order and a restraining order which prohibits her from contacting her mum for two years at North Staffordshire Justice Centre.

Prosecutor Lee Stone told how Walters' mum called the police on February 17 to complain about the defendant.

"The call handler could hear a banging noise in the background. Her mum said there had been other incidents of a similar nature since January 16," said Mr Stone, reported StokeonTrentLive.

"On arrival police observed Walters banging on a front window and shouting and swearing at the occupiers inside. She was arrested for harassment."

He said Walters used to live with her mum but would lose her temper and shout which would lead to complaints from neighbours.

"A few months ago her mum told her she was not welcome at the address any more but she kept returning," said Mr Stone.

"At one point she stayed in the outhouse at the back of the property. She told her she did not want her there but the defendant would ignore her. The police would move her but she always returned, banging on the doors and windows and demanding money. The mother paid her £10 at a time."

The victim said the council tried to evict her due to her daughter's behaviour, the court heard, while she was suffering from depression while the situation was going on.

But now she is no longer taking antidepressants and is getting a good night's sleep although she added her neighbours hardly speak to her any more.

Walters, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to harassment without violence.

Andrew Turnock, mitigating, said Walters has been engaging well with Brighter Futures for about nine months and with other agencies to address her substance misuse.

He said Walters stayed in her mum's outhouse when she had nowhere to live.

She is currently staying in hotels and she is sometimes asked to leave due to her complex needs but she has been accepted for a place at Concrete in Shelton which is 24 hour supported accommodation designed for women in her situation.

He claimed the victim "rationed" Walters' benefits at £10 a day which led to Walters attending at her address.

Mr Turnock added: "She attended to receive the payment and then mother complained about the repeated attendance."

As part of the community order Walters must complete a rehabilitation activity requirement for 10 days.

District Judge Ian Barnes said: "You repeatedly attended at your mother's address. You were abusive, demanding money. This was no way to treat your own mother. Your offending has had an effect on her. She was threatened with eviction from her own property. It has also affected her relationships with her friends and family.

"In your favour you are now co-operating on a voluntary basis with a number of agencies.

"It is clear that the instability in your life at the time was clearly the reason why you were attending at your mother's address. She was quite rightly in charge of your finances and was trying to do the best for you.

"It gave you a reason to repeatedly go back to the address but it does not excuse your behaviour once you were there."

As well as the fine Walters must pay £135 costs and a £114 surcharge.
