Abuser pinned partner down and throttled her until she passed out

A man sat on his partner's chest and grabbed her by the throat until she lost consciousness, a court has heard.

It was the second time in a matter of days David Matthew Davies had assaulted the woman. Swansea Crown Court heard the first assault took place on January 21 this year at an address in Ammanford when 37-year-old Davies followed his partner into the toilet and threw tobacco over her before spitting at her.

Police were called and the defendant "lunged" at the officers when they arrived.

Four days later Hughes attacked the woman again, pinning his partner to the bed by sitting on her chest with his knees on her arms and then choking her until she lost consciousness.

Davies, of Goshawk Road, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, admitted assault by beating, three counts of assaulting an emergency worker, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH).

Judge Huw Rees said it seemed from what he had read that the victim still "has feelings" for the defendant but that she did not want to be subjected to violence. He told the defendant that when a man assaults a woman it not only demeans her but also demeans him as a human being.

Giving the defendant a one-third discount for his guilty pleas the judge sentenced him to a total of eight months in prison suspended for 12 months. Davies was also ordered to complete 180 hours of unpaid work.
