Abu Dhabi Grand Prix: Max Verstappen slams stewards’ decision after coming together with Lewis Hamilton

Max Verstappen has slammed the decision from the stewards not to investigate after the Duch driver came together with his title rival Lewis Hamilton.

Both racers are fighting it out to become Formula 1 World Champion as they are currently locked on an equal number of points ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

With no shortage of drama throughout the season up until this point the opening lap of the Grand Prix at the Yas Marina circuit has added even more controversy.

A lunge saw both title protagonists go off track with Hamilton seeming to gain the lasting advantage.

However, the stewards decided not to get involved and deemed no investigation was necessary for the incident between Hamilton and Verstappen.

Race director Michael Masi said Hamilton had slowed down enough not to have gained a lasting advantage from using the run-off at Turn 7.

When told of the stewards’ decision over the radio a clearly aggrieved Verstappen branded the decision ‘incredible’.

Red Bull chief Christian Horner was also furious with the decision.

He accused the stewards of a lack of consistency when speaking to Sky Sports during the race.

"We are a little bit shocked at that because apparently Lewis gave his advantage back, which we have failed to see yet," he said.

"It's a total lack of consistency.

"We are focused on the race and still a long way to go."

It has proved to be the perfect start for Hamilton so far as he shot past his title rival off the start line, despite Verstappen starting on pole position.

However, the early race incident is sure to generate more controversy as the race rumbles on.
