'Absolutely disgusted': Walker's anger at rubbish left at woodland beauty spot by 'youngsters'

Young people have been blamed for making a mess of picturesque woodland by holding parties.

Crowds of youngsters have been reportedly seen drinking, camping and partying into the early hours at the woods at the rear of Flax Bourton quarry,

Empty bottles, cans, camping chairs, camping stoves and even tents have been left strewn across the beauty spot.

Walker Michalea Gibbs, 50, has been walking in the woods for the last 35 years and said she was left horrified by the level of rubbish she has seen left there in recent days.

Michalea, who works at Bristol Airport, walks in the woodland every day with her Border Collie Tess.

“I was absolutely disgusted by what I saw,” she said.

“There was rubbish everywhere, broken cans and bottles and general litter.

“It was in the worse state I have ever seen it.”

Michalea says young people have been camping out in the woods – often leaving their chairs and tents behind.

There is also evidence of them having barbecues at a time when the ground is tinder dry due to the hot weather.

Michalea says the problems have got a lot worse during lockdown.

“It is mainly young people,” she said.

“I went up walking the other day and there was a large group of teenagers there all drinking.

“It’s definitely got worse during lockdown and these youngsters are just using it as a place to party where they won’t be disturbed.

“I have been going up the woods for decades and when we were young we used to have picnics in the clearing.

“But we always used to take our rubbish home – not leave it there for someone else to clear up.

“These youngsters need to have more respect for their environment.

“Not only that but there is a lot of wildlife in the area, deer, badgers and birds of prey.

“These youngsters need to think about the impact this rubbish is having on the wildlife in the area.”

Michalea says she would like to see police patrol the area.

“A lot of these youngsters are obviously under age drinking and they keep going up there and doing it because they know they will not be punished.

“More needs to be done to protect our beautiful areas so everyone can enjoy them.”

North Somerset Council has already been forced to close off the nearby Abbots Pool due to issues with anti social behaviour and littering.

Bristol Live is currently running a campaign called Don't Trash Our Future, in response to shocking piles of litter left in public spaces in recent weeks.

In June, Bristol City Council had to fence off parts of the harbourside to tackle antisocial behaviour following complaints from residents.

Images showing the area strewn with rubbish and bottles were reported by Bristol Live in May, and residents even complained of people defecating outside their doorsteps while public toilets were closed.

Just last week the RSPCA urged people to dispose of their litter properly, after a baby bird was impaled on a kebab stick in Clifton.
