'Absolutely absurd' low number of fines issued for dog fouling across Dublin city

An "absolutely absurd" total of 27 fines have been issued for dog fouling across Dublin city in the last five years.

And Councillors were shocked there were so few fines issued.

A fine of up to €150 can be issued if a dog owner fails to clean up after their dog's waste, which can increase to €3,000 for those convicted of failing to pay the original fine.

In figures released to Cllr Keith Connolly, there were no fines issued in three out of five areas in the last five years.

There were seven fines issued in the Central Area and 20 in the South Central Area. No fines were issued in the North Central, North West and South East Areas.

There was wide condemnation of irresponsible pet owners from Councillors at Monday's meeting.

Labour Cllr Dermot Lacey dubbed the number of fines issued 'absolutely absurd'.

He said: "It is one of the biggest contributors to dirt in the city. A number of Councillors from a number of different parts [of the city] proposed the idea of a community warden.

"We believe that it will be effective and cost effective as well. 27 fines over the last five years is absolutely absurd."
