'Absolute legend' taxi driver saved 82-year-old's life after dropping her off

An 'absolute legend' taxi driver saved an 82-year-old's life when she suffered a bad fall just after getting out of his car.

Eileen O'Brien, 82, had been enjoying a night at her local British Legion on Easter Sunday and booked a private hire to drop her off at home in Garston .

The great-grandmother got out of the car just after midnight - but the driver waited to make sure she got into her house safely.

When he didn't see a light go on inside her house after a few minutes, the driver got out to check everything way okay.

He found mum-of-four Eileen lying near her garden gate, crying out in pain after having a bad fall.

Eileen had been calling out to her sister Pat, who was still in the taxi, but no one could hear her cries for help from the front garden.

If it wasn't for the considerate and caring actions of the driver, Eileen's family fear she may have been left in pain all night.

Speaking to the ECHO, Eileen's son John O'Brien said: "She usually goes out with me and my auntie Pat to the local British Legion to get out of the house.

"We always use Village Taxis and she was picked up and dropped off at home and the driver actually waited to make sure she got in the house safely.

"My mum lives in a cul-de-sac and it's quite dark with a four foot fence in the front garden. When he hadn't seen the lights go on he found her fallen over and collapsed in absolute agony by the garden gate.

"She was crying out for help to try and get the attention of my auntie Pat but because they were sat in the car they couldn't hear her."

From clapping when the plane lands to queuing at the bar - these are even more things that annoy Scousers

Eileen, who has six grandchildren and still volunteers at her local YMCA charity shop in Garston village, suffered a broken hip in the fall and was taken to hospital.

John said: "He got out the car to check on her. I drive a taxi myself over on the Wirral and when we're dropping an elderly person off you like to think the drivers will hang on and make sure they are safe.

"It was dark and with it being a cul-de-sac you don't always get people walking past. I think she would have been left there overnight and I don't believe she would have survived."

The sweet reason this 105-year-old Great Gran was surprised with a motorbike on her birthday

Overwhelmed by the driver's kind gesture, John got in touch with Village taxis to try and find the man who helped his mother.

An operator for the private hire firm informed him it was a driver called Robert Wilson - and John said he plans to drop a card and 'a bottle of something nice' off as a thank you.

He said: "We are so appreciative as a family. He's an absolute legend as far as we are concerned. He saved my mum."
