'Absolute joke': Cristiano Ronaldo beating Mohamed Salah at Ballon d'Or leaves rival fans fuming

Lionel Messi was crowned the Ballon d'Or winner for a record seventh time on Monday night but that was not the only talking point from the night in Paris.

Cristiano Ronaldo finished sixth, his lowest showing in 11 years, despite finishing as the Serie A top goalscorer in his final season with Juventus.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah is arguably the most in-form player in the world as he returns week after week for Liverpool, but could only muster a seventh-placed finish on the night.

Salah has already come face to face with Ronaldo this season and firmly came out on top, scoring a hat-trick in a 5-0 demolition of United at Old Trafford.

Fans took to Twitter to express their dismay at the decision to pit Ronaldo ahead of the Liverpool star.

The Ballon d'Or, a prestigious football award produced by France Football, was postponed last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This year saw the return of the ceremony with the Yashin Trophy, awarded to goalkeepers, the Kopa Trophy, for the best Under-21 player, the woman's and men's Ballon d'Or and, for the first time the Striker and Club of the Year.

Euro 2020 hero Gianluigi Donnarumma took home the trophy for the shot-stoppers as Barcelona's Pedri was awarded the Kopa Trophy whilst Ballon d'Or runner-up Robert Lewandowski was crowned the Striker of the Year and Chelsea took for the team prize.
