'Absolute disgrace' - Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher latest to slam handball rule

Jamie Carragher has urged football authorities to change the handball laws following a weekend of controversial penalties.

Crystal Palace conceded a penalty to Everton after VAR deemed Joel Ward to have handled the ball on Saturday b efore Andy Carroll struck the arm of Eric Dier in the dying moments of the clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.

A spot-kick was awarded after protracted deliberation from VAR and Carragher was enraged at the fact it was given as Newcastle levelled through Callum Wilson.

The former Liverpool defender labelled the current rules a joke and urged authorities to consider a change.

"It’s an absolute disgrace. It’s an absolute joke," he said.

"Newcastle fans will be absolutely ecstatic, I can understand that. But everyone else in this country will say exactly what I’m saying and thinking.

"Eric Dier is jumping for the ball, he has absolutely no idea where his arms are gonna be, it’s half a yard away from him, and hits him on the arm.

"He has no idea what’s going on.

"This is a joke, whether it’s the Premier League, the FA, FIFA, Collina, whoever is involved in this, stop it - you’re ruining football for everybody. Absolute joke."
