Absence of Mike Munchak showed in Steelers 4th preseason game

Thursday night was an ugly one for the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line. Don’t misunderstand, the starting five for Pittsburgh is still among the very best in the NFL. But what we got on Thursday was backups and against the reserves for the Carolina Panthers and it was ugly.

The Panthers just pushed the Steelers offensive line around all game long. So much so, the Steelers had seven penalties in the game and five of them were holds by the offensive line.

As this debacle was going down Thursday night all I could think about was Mike Munchak. The former Steelers offensive line coach left to take the same job with the Denver Broncos in order to the closer to family. I can’t help but think if he saw any of this game he was fuming at how poorly that unit played.

And it is hard to imagine if these guys had been coached by Munchak in training camp and the preseason they would have played this bad. As the season goes on and the inevitable injuries happen, the impact of Munchak’s departure is going to be felt. The starters were built by Munchak but these backups could expose the fact Munchak might be the biggest loss of the offseason.
